Solved Examples

Question 1: The perimeter of an isosceles triangle is 24 cm and length of one of the sides is 4 cm. Find the lengths of the other two equal sides.

Solution:
Let the lengths of equal sides of the triangle = a
and length of other side of the triangle = b = 4

Step 1:

Given, perimeter of isosceles triangle = 24

Perimeter of isosceles triangle = 2a + b

=> 2a + b = 24

=> 2a + 4 = 24

Step 2:

Solve for a,

Subtract 4 from both sides

=> 2a + 4 - 4 = 24 - 4

=> 2a = 20

Divide each side by 2

=> $\frac{2a}{2} = \frac{20}{2}$

=> a = 10

Hence the lengths of the other two equal sides = 10 cm

Question 2: What is the length of the wooden strip required to frame a photograph of length and breadth 42 cm and 38 cm respectively.

Solution:
Step 1:
Given
Length of the photograph = 42 cm
Breadth of the photograph = 38 cm

Step 2:
Photograph is of the shape of rectangle.

[ Perimeter of rectangle = 2(Length + Breadth) ]

Length of wooden strip required = Perimeter of photograph

= 2(Length + Breadth)

= 2(42 + 38)

= 2 * 80

= 160

Hence, required length of the wooden strip is 160 cm. answer

Question 3: Water boils at a temperature of 100 degree Celsius. At what temperature Fahrenheit does water boil.
Solution:
Step 1:
Given
Boiling point of water = 1000 C

Step 2:
Change  the temperature on the Celsius scale to temperature on the Fahrenheit scale.

[ F = 1.8 * C + 32 ]

=> F = 1.8 * C + 32

=> F = 1.8 * 100 + 32

=> F = $\frac{18}{10}$ * 100 + 32

=> F = 180 + 32

=> F = 212

The Fahrenheit temperature at which water boils is 2120 F. answer
